Plans for the construction of a new hangar at Biggin Hill airport on part of the metropolitan green belt have been submitted to Bromley Council.
The proposed structure, which would be 15.5m high, 132m wide and 43m deep, would be built on a site that is currently used for aircraft parking and overflow car parking, as well as some open space.
Although the site is currently in the metropolitan green belt, the latest draft of the local plan proposes removing green belt designation as "the land does not serve the purposes of the Green Belt as defined by the National Planning Policy Framework".
Under the proposals, the hangar will be supported by new infrastructure, including 42 parking spaces accessed via a new link road from the terminal building and main airport entrance.
Extra office space and storage space, and an extension of the apron area to allow aircraft access to the hangar, would also be provided.
The proposed structure is entitled to permitted development rights, which means that work can be carried out without the need for planning permission.
An environmental impact assessment screening was carried out in June and found that "the proposed development would not give rise to a significant effect on residential occupiers in terms of visual amenity, air quality, air or ground traffic movements or other equivalent material issues".
